[ 1 ] How often do Rotterdammers experience discrimination?

The map below shows that Rotterdammers who live in some neighbourhoods experience more discrimination than Rotterdammers from other neighbourhoods. This map does not show where an incident took place, but where the residents live. Discrimination often occurs outside someone’s neighborhood.

This map shows that residents of orange neighbourhoods report feeling more discriminated against than those living in green neighbourhoods. Nearly 40% of discrimination incidents occur within one’s own neighbourhood. Factors such as ethnic diversity, economic disparities, and social inequalities within the neighbourhood may contribute to why some Rotterdammers experience discrimination more frequently. [ 2 ] Where do Rotterdammers who experience more discrimination live?

See for yourself how likely it is that people living in your neighbourhood experience discrimination either within or outside the neighbourhood. Play with the bars to order the neighbourhoods from highest to lowest on the score of experienced discrimination. The lower the score, the lower the percentage of people in the neighbourhood experiencing discrimination.

While approximately a quarter of Rotterdam’s neighbourhoods have residents of whom less than 15 percent experience discrimination, this percentage is above 20 percent in almost half of the neighbourhoods. This shows where a large proportion of Rotterdammers who feel discriminated against live. Over the years, a large proportion of Rotterdammers lived in areas where relatively many residents reported experiences of discrimination. For example, residents of CS Kwartier and Oud Crooswijk saw an increase in the percentage of discrimination experiences. Curious about what else the numbers can show? Play with the data yourself.
